Hi guys! So it's officially been one week since Dave and I returned from Florida and I'm still on such a Disney high! I swear all I can think about is how to get back there ASAP lol! I've also had my mind set on Disney weddings but I was reading the latest issue of Martha Stewart Weddings and there was this article "Decide on Distance" that really resonated with me. In the article the writer posed four questions that brides considering a destination wedding should ask themselves before committing to that route.
1. Will your VIPs be able to travel? To me this is a big factor in deciding whether or not to host a destination wedding. My grandmothers are both older now and asking them to travel and do all these wedding things is a lot to consider. And if family members are unsure if it's affordable or not that could cause a serious problem too.
2. Can you afford a planner? If you were getting married in your hometown you could probably do most of the arranging yourself but if you're thinking about a destination wedding you will almost definitely need a person that knows the area and the vendors down there and can successfully coordinate all of that for you. That is going to be a big chunk of your wedding budget right there.
3. Are you willing to play host? If you're asking your family and friends to travel for your wedding be prepared to have activities and events before and after the wedding. Everyone will be dying to see you and share in your happiness so if your wedding is a weekend celebration it's courteous to have things for your guests to do.
4. Are you willing to relinquish control? Now this seems more dependent on where you get married. For example, in Disney control is their middle name, there is nothing that you can't ask for that they won't provide but if you venture to some exotic island chances are you may not get everything the way you imagined it based on limited vendors and venues.
So here's some food for thought if a destination wedding is appealing to you. I hope it's not a buzz kill but I know for me I've always been intrigued by destination weddings and felt that this is a practical way of thinking to think about it seriously.
